Tips to know about Gems and Semi-precious stones
-     The three qualities of a Gemstone are-Beauty, Durability and Rarity.
-     Gems are classified in to two categories- Natural Gems (Gem minerals and Organic Gems) and Artificial Gems (Synthetic Gems).
-     A Gem is assessed by 4C’s- Colour, Clarity, Cut, Carat weight. The colour should be pure and evenly distributed. The gem should be transparent and there should not be any visible inclusions. The gem should be cut in proper proportion with a proper crown and pavilion. The higher the carat weight, the more expensive the gemstone is.
-      1 carat= 0.2 grams and 5 cts= 1g
-     Often the crystal shape is the characteristic of a gemstone.

All the crystals are divided into seven groups:

  1. Cubic- Diamond, Garnet, Spinel
  2. Tetrgonal-Zircon
  3. Hexagonal-Emerald
  4. Trigonal-Sapphire, Quartz, Tourmaline
  5. Orthorhombic-Alexandrite, Topaz
  6. Monoclinic-Moonstone
  7. Triclinic-Turquoise

-     There are some gemstones which are made up of Non-crystalline materials e.g Opal
-     The physical properties of Gems include

  1. Hardness- Hardness is the resistance for scratching a Gemstone by another material. The Gemstones are tested on Moh’s scale of Hardness.
  2. Specific Gravity-The density of a Gemstone is compared in relative to the density of water. E.g Ruby-4; Quartz-2.65.
  3. The Gemstones are also tested using their optical properties e.g. Refractive Index using Refractometer, double refraction using Polari scope etc.
  4. The gemstones can also be identified by studying their Spectrum. The white light is made out of several colours as seen in a rainbow. Some elements in the gemstone absorb some of these colours and the remaining colours produce the colour of the gemstone. Through the Spectroscope these absorbed colours are seen as Dark lines or bands creating a pttern which helps in identifying the gem variety.
